7th Annual Kingsley Heritage Celebration, The Power of Faith

A full afternoon of presentations exploring the importance of faith to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century African American slaves in the fight for freedom and civil rights will be offered at Kingsley Plantation on Saturday, October 30, 2004, in Jacksonville, Florida.

The event – the seventh annual Kingsley Heritage Celebration – is entitled “The Power of Faith.” Sponsored by the National Park Service’s Timucuan Ecological and Historic Preserve and the Florida Humanities Council, the event is free and open to the public. The event celebrates the determination and perseverance of the human spirit to survive against incredible odds.

According to Timucuan Preserve Superintendent Barbara Goodman, “Faith gave enslaved men, women, and children the strength to persevere through slavery. It empowered African Americans to fight for Civil Rights. Faith today enables communities to maintain family and tradition. The seventh annual Kingsley Heritage Celebration will tell the story of two centuries of perseverance and survival due to the remarkable power of faith.” The program has been designed to entertain as well as to inform, Ms. Goodman added.
